Catching Joy supports Jump Start’s Read For The Record event on Oct. 8, 2009. Read For The Record is an annual worldwide campaign to bring preschool children together with valued grownups in their lives to read the same book, on the same day, in communities all over the world. This year’s book is Eric Carle’s book “The Hungry Caterpillar.” Catching Joy Board Member Laurel Gerdine, who is the owner of Gymboree Play and Music in Newton, hosted several readings of the Hungry Caterpillar in the Play and Learn classes and School Skills classes. Thanks to all who participated!
Jumpstart is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. To support this mission, it brings college students and community volunteers together with preschool children in low-income communities for a full school year of individualized mentoring and tutoring. Jumpstart’s research-based curriculum is focused on building language, literacy, social and emotional skills in preschool children, while providing its volunteers with a rewarding way to have lasting impact in their communities. To strengthen and sustain its program, Jumpstart works with education partners and sponsors in mutually beneficial collaborations. For more info., see www.jstart.org
